The “Betor Bichonee” (Cane Fan) of Auniati Satra is a 350-years old cottage industry, that is a symbol of traditional aristocracy from the Ahom era. Currently, this art which carries renowned tradition in national and international contexts, is one of the identities of Satriya handicrafts. The handmade Cane fan traditionally prepared with Hengul and Hital colours and decorated with fancy needlework of Pat, Muga and Mokhmal i.e., velvet cloth, is universally admired.
In addition t being presented to Ahom kings, in 1872 the then Satradhikar of Sri Sri Auniati Satra, Dutta Dev Goswami, presented this special “Bichonee” to the British Chahab. Later, it was also presented to Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and the prominent leaders, including the former President APJ Abdul Kalam, and the present Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As a royal gift, there is a high demand for this handicraft and to promote its entrepreneurship and geographical indications tag (GI Tag), the voluntary organization “Majulir Xahitya” has taken special initiatives in collaboration with OIL India Limited.
